Multi-sensory Literacy (MSL) Instruction refers to the VDOE's initiative to train teachers in the Orton-Gillingham approach for direct, explicit phonics instruction. Participants are selected through an application process. TTAC coordinators provide support for implementation via instructional coaching and professional learning communities that encourage networking and skill building. The VDOE provides "refreshers" for implementers.
Strategic Instruction Model (SIM™) is a research based instructional model that promotes adolescent literacy via Content Enhancement Routines that facilitate problem solving and critical thinking in inclusive settings and/or Learning Strategies that focus on direct explicit instruction for individuals or small groups on specific skills. Training is available through an application for TTAC services.
Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports (VTSS) is a data-driven, decision-making framework for establishing the academic, behavioral and social-emotional supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students. Participants are selected through an application process submitted to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), which requires completion of required "Exploration and Installation" activities. Those accepted receive intensified
professional learning and coaching supports for effective implementation.
Communities of Learning (CoL) for Inclusive Programs is a statewide grant offered to Early Childhood programs throughout the Commonwealth to increase inclusive services in the community. The CoL delivers targeted technical assistance and professional development to leaders in early childhood education programs. The online Col is focused on building and maintaining high quality early childhood inclusive programs.
Community of Leaders in Autism (COLA) is a regional network of representative autism specialists who provide training and technical assistance for students with autism within their school divisions. The region 4 COLA is part of a statewide system sustained through on-going collaboration with the Virginia Commonwealth University Autism Center for Excellence, (
VCU-ACE).
Inclusive practices describes the integration of effective practices resulting in high quality instruction and positive outcomes for all students. Aligned with VDOE priorities, TTAC coordinators provide professional learning and resources supporting inclusive practices, such as co-teaching and high leverage practices (HLP).
High Leverage Practices in Special Education (HLPs) are a set of inclusive practices that support learning for all students. TTAC coordinators provide professional learning opportunities for collaborative teams and other instructional personnel to increase their knowledge and skills in collaboration, assessment, social/emotional support and instruction.
Co-Teaching Demonstration Sites are Virginia schools participating in the Virginia Department of Education's Excellence in Co-Teaching Initiative. They have been chosen by VDOE to host visitors at their designated co-teaching demonstration classrooms and to produce materials showcasing their co-teaching practices (
Middle and High School,
Elementary,
Math). The TTAC at GMU coordinates region 4 demonstration site visits.
Leadership in Effective and Developmentally-appropriate Services (LEADS) is a network that empowers local leaders to provide high-quality programs and services throughout Virginia for young children, ages 2-5 years, with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Leaders network to improve collection, reporting, and use of Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Indicator data, identify and celebrate strong program components, and identify program components in need of improvement.

Assistive Technology (AT) Coordinators is Region 4 professional learning community comprised of coordinators, administrators, and related service providers responsible for assistive technology in their school divisions. The group meets twice a year in Fairfax to discuss new AT trends and share strategies on considerations, equipment management, or other AT related issues.
Early Childhood Coordinators is a regional Professional Learning Partnership comprised of early childhood and early childhood special educator representatives in region 4. This group meets monthly to address needs of the local education agencies and to support local and statewide initiatives such as inclusion, data, or transition.
Math Consortium is a professional learning community comprised of Region 4 math specialists that meets six times a year in Warrenton, VA to discuss various issues related to mathematics instruction, standards of learning, and testing.

Northern Virginia Transition Coalition (NVTC) is comprised of representatives from school divisions, colleges and agencies united in their vision that all students with disabilities in Northern Virginia have the knowledge, skills, resources and supports to succeed in their transition to adulthood. A major activity of the NVTC is the biennial college and career conference, Future Quest.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Professional Learning Community (PLC) meets six times during the school year to engage in collaborative learning to strengthen practices aligned with the core features of PBIS and multi-tiered systems of supports in Virginia.
George Mason University Training and Technical Assistance Center (GMU TTAC) is part of the Virginia Department of Education statewide training and technical assistance service delivery system to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
Kellar Library, a collaborative effort between the GMU TTAC, Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities and George Mason University's College of Education and Human Development, loans special education books, videos, assistive technology devices, assessments, journals, reference materials, and K-1 2 curriculum materials.
I'm Determined provides resources for students, families and school personnel to increase self-determined behavior, especially among students with disabilities.
Leadership in Effective and Developmentally-appropriate Services (LEADS) provides training and technical assistance for administrators of early childhood special education programs across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Accessible documents, resources, and current events are frequently updated to meet the most up-to-date information as demanded by the VDOE.
TTAC Online - VA Projects offers a wide range of resources, event listings and free online training opportunities for professionals and family members of children and youth with disabilities (birth to 22).
Virginia Cross-Sector Professional Development Team (VCPD) provides leadership and resources promoting high quality, coordinated, cross-sector early childhood professional development.
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) leads and facilitates the development and implementation of a quality public education system that meets the needs of students and assists them in becoming educated, productive, responsible, and self-reliant citizens.
Virginia Family Special Education Connection provides a one-stop-shop for community, educational, family life, and legislative resources to support families and caregivers of children receiving special education services.
