Parent Involvement Project

Fact Sheet for Families

The T/TAC at George Mason University (GMU) recognizes that families are vital members of the educational team serving students with disabilities and that they play an important role in the academic progress and success of their children. In addition, each T/TAC implements the state improvement goal of providing professional development to improve the performance of children and youth with disabilities, by enhancing the knowledge, skills, and abilities, of all personnel who work with them. To access T/TAC professional development services, school personnel should submit a request.

Family members of students with disabilities may suggest the use of T/TAC services to their child’s teachers, administrators, or related service providers. T/TACs support parent-professional partnerships; therefore, families are welcome to attend training events as part of school-based teams, or as appropriate. Also, families may access other information that is available from our Web site (ttac.gmu.edu); in the T/TAC Telegram (http://ttac.gmu.edu/newsletters/), our e-newsletter; and from T/TAC Online http://www.ttaconline.org/. Statewide, T/TACs collaborate with Parent Resource Centers (PRCs) to offer training events for families of children and youth with disabilities.

T/TAC Lending Resources

To foster the mission of the T/TAC-GMU, the T/TAC Lending Resources of the Kellar Library provides educational personnel and families, within the Virginia Department of Education's Region 4, with materials to support the improvement of educational opportunities and success of children and youth with disabilities. Families may check out print materials either through the online catalog, by email, by telephone at 703.993.3672, or on a walk-in basis. Please contact the librarian, Jackie Kinder Petersen, jpetersk@gmu.edu for more information regarding the lending process of print materials. If families are interested in learning about software or assistive technology (AT) devices, please contact the AT Coordinator in your local school system.
