Assistive Technology

The Assistive Technology Priority Project goal is to increase access to the general education curriculum for students with disabilities through the use of assistive technology (AT). This project supports the accommodations and modifications that are necessary for students with disabilities to master curricular objectives and to participate in statewide assessments.

The project has developed the website www.ttaconline.org which provides the following:

VA Assessments

  • Information on the various alternative and alternate assessment options for the state of Virginia.

SOL Enhanced

  • Differentiated lesson plans to deliver SOL-based content instruction to a diverse population of learners, including students with disabilities and/or limited English proficiency (LEP).

Resources/Events

  • The resource section includes books, articles, journals, relevant legislative initiatives, materials, and websites, while the events section highlights state and national conferences, workshops, trainings, and lectures. Both of these components support professionals, family members, and others who serve children and youth with disabilities.

Online Training

  • Self-paced, online workshops designed by T/TAC staff members throughout Virginia that provide ongoing professional development opportunities.

Region IV

As a part of the VDOE Assistive Technology Priority Project team, the Region IV Coordinators at GMU (AT-GMU) will support the project’s 2007-2008 goals below:

  • To increase knowledge in universally designed tools to improve literacy.
  • To promote the use of AT solutions infused into the curriculum and daily activities of students with disabilities.
  • To promote awareness of Universal Design for Learning.
  • To increase information about accessible instructional material throughout the school divisions in Region IV.

Continuing with its regional activities as an Intellishare Center, AT-GMU will host two training workshops which will be announced on www.ttaconline.org within the Events section. AT-GMU is providing additional regional support by developing training workshops in the use and applications of interactive boards in all content areas. Also, AT-GMU is facilitating opportunities for local assistive technology support teams to attend state conferences to help them strengthen their professional development.
